After seeing the GSM Palm Pre at MWC this week, visions of the Palm Pre on AT&T might’ve started dancing in your head. Bummer for you, since the Pre is Sprint’s exclusively for 2009.
CNBC says that according to the usual “person familiar with the matter,” Sprint has locked up the Pre and thrown away the key in the US through at least the end of this year. Granted, if the Pre doesn’t come out till June, which is looking likely, that’s only about a six-month window of exclusivity, which is still much shorter than say, the iPhone, which is going on two years at this point.
Since the Pre is what’s gonna save Palm (if it can), you can bet they’re itching to put it on as many as carriers to make it available to as many people as possible to kickstart their new platform. Also, don’t forget that the Pre is just the first of many WebOS phones, so there’ll be plenty of other hardware running the multi-tasking wunderkind OS. [CNBC]

LG’s upcoming Go-Go gadget phone, the Versa, with its modular keyboard and gamepad (suck it, iPhone?) is launching on March 1 for $200 after a $50 rebate. Man, that’s a ton of money-sucking accessories.

Nintendo’s brilliant accessory strategy has come to cellphones. That said, LG is the current king of dumb texting phones and every iteration of its touchscreens are better than the last, so this could amount to something more than a cheap ploy to drive accessory sales. [Engadget]

Sneakily disappeared from Sprint’s Palm Pre site is any mention of tethering. Really, Sprint, you’re gonna go that way? There’s still time to take it back, er, give it back, you know. [Engadget]

T-Mobile USA, the No. 4 U.S. mobile phone service, said yesterday it is offering a $50 per month service plan to long-time customers in San Francisco.
Under the promotion the company is also offering customers a $135 credit if they switch from a rival service to T-Mobile USA.
The test promotion comes after Boost Mobile launched an all-in mobile plan for $50 a month in January. T-Mobile USA is seen by analysts as the carrier most vulnerable to losing customers to Boost.
A T-Mobile USA representative said the plan would only be available to customers who have used its service for 22 months or more and that as the company has “additional details regarding a national plan it would provide” them.
UBS analyst John Hodulik said in a research note that he expects the plan to be available nationwide in coming weeks.
With 85% + consumer penetration here in the US, it makes sense that the price wars would start to heat up. This can only be good for US consumers who need all the help they can get reducing their monthly expenses.
