Bluetooth Wrist-Set: Like a Half-Assed Dick Tracy Watch

When it comes to Bluetooth, I don’t know what’s lamer—looking like you are talking to yourself or talking into your wrist. If you chose the former, Adtec has a device for you.

For the equivalent of $65, users can have a wristband that connects to their cellphone via Bluetooth, complete with speaker, volume control and a call answer button. Battery life is said to be around five hours and it is available in either white or grey. Seriously though, if you are going to make a Bluetooth wristband that actually communicates, have the decency to put an actual watch on there. Even a tiny digital display would suffice. Samsung Promises ‘More Than Three’ Android Handsets By End Of Year

Posted in News on Wednesday, February 18th, 2009 at 6:04 am No Comments

Samsung’s Android-less showing at MWC may not have been a surprise, but that’s not to say that it wasn’t disappointing. So what now? Samsung says “more than three” Android handsets are coming before 2010.

Head of Product Strategy Won-Pyo Hong says the Android units will ship alongside a LiMo handset, marking a serious shift in focus to Linux for Samsung. The company isn’t spilling any more details for now, so we’ve really just got the words “Android” “Samsung” and “handset” to spark our imaginations. That, and the equivocal “more than three” thing—surely, “more than three” just means “at least four”, right? [Reuters via Crunchgear]

In an incident that wasn’t at all excessive (nope), a 14-year-old girl in Wisconsin was arrested for refusing to stop sending text messages during class, where she proceeded to hide the phone in her ASS CRACK.

According to the Smoking Gun, the unnamed girl apparently ignored the teacher’s requests to stop using her Samsung phone, but she kept on SMSing as she pleased. When the school security officer was called in, the girl claimed she didn’t have a phone. The school finally called in the police, who searched the girl, and found the phone under her pants “in the buttocks area.” The police confiscated her phone and charged her with disorderly conduct. TrapCall Displays Blocked Numbers on Your Caller ID

Posted in News on Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 at 4:20 pm No Comments

A new service dubbed TrapCall allows users to unmask pesky blocked callers—revealing not only their number, but their name and address in some cases.

It’s actually a fairly simple procedure. TrapCall reroutes unanswered blocked calls through a 1-800 number then back to your voicemail. Since anonymity is denied to 1-800 numbers, TrapCall simply picks up the number as the data moves through their servers. According to a Wired test, the rerouting process only took about 6 seconds on AT&T—and during that time all the caller hears is standard ringing.

TrapCall’s basic unmasking service is free, and includes the option of blacklisting unwanted callers by phone number. It also allows you to listen to your voicemail over the web. It’s currently available to AT&T and T-Mobile subscribers, with support for the other major carriers due within weeks, says TelTech president Meir Cohen.

For a $10 upgrade to “Mouse Trap” service, users can receive transcripts of voicemail messages and can, in some cases, send text messages with the phone number of the caller. A $25 “Bear Trap” upgrade allows you to record phone calls and receive text messages with the billing name and street address of your caller. Amusingly enough, the only way to truly protect your phone number from TrapCall is by signing up for their SpoofCard service—it allows you to display a number of your choosing on a Caller ID.

Obviously, this will generate serious privacy concerns. On one hand, it prevents creepy or threatening calls and on the other, it could expose victims trying to keep their whereabouts a secret. So, which side of this debate are you on? [TrapCall via Wired via Boing Boing Gadgets]
